NFL Draft 2021: These teams already want a do-over on their first round picks
It was a milestone night for Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman, who found himself boxed into a corner after the Philadelphia Eagles traded up ahead of them to steal Devonta Smith. Gettleman pivoted nicely by trading back for the first time ever in his career as an executive, snagging an extra first-round pick in 2022 from the Chicago Bears, but his choice at No. 20 was a bit lacking.
The Giants stayed with wide receiver at 20 by taking Kadarius Toney out of Florida to give Daniel Jones another weapon. The idea made sense since New York is trying to eliminate as many ifs from their evaluation of Jones as possible but the pick left something to be desired since Toney is pretty raw as a player.
Toney does have the type of home-run speed to be a dynamic weapon in the offense, but his route tree is limited after starting for just one year in Florida. There is work to do to develop Toney, who can be a gadget player right now with the potential for more, but in a win-now year, there were more reliable contributors available for the Giants at 20.
Other receivers like Rashod Bateman and Elijah Moore were available with more polish than Toney. The Giants could have also found tremendous value at the edge rusher position with someone like Kwity Paye, making this pick a tricky one to utilize to its fullest potential.
