3 best outcomes for Green Bay Packers in Round 1
By John Buhler
The Green Bay Packers are hoping to get a player who can help them right away at No. 29.
With their eyes on getting back to a Super Bowl, the Green Bay Packers are looking to add a piece to their championship-caliber team that could get them over the top in the 2021 NFL Draft.
No matter what the Packers do at No. 29, it will be better than what they did last draft by reaching on a project quarterback in Jordan Love out of Utah State. Even though the Packers will be one of the better teams in the NFC again next season, they still have a few holes on their roster they can address with their late first-round pick. Here are three players they would love to take at No. 29.
Maybe one of these three college stars is the missing piece for Green Bay?
Green Bay Packers: 3 best outcomes with first-round pick
Jalen Mayfield can come in and fortify a depleted offensive line
If the Packers want to win the NFC for the first time in over a decade, they need to get another MVP-level season out of franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers. One of the best things they can do for him is getting him some help in the trenches. A player who could be coming off the board around where they are picking in the first round is Michigan offensive tackle Jalen Mayfield.
Throughout the draft process, Mayfield has been a fringe first-round pick. While not one of the best offensive tackles in his draft class, Mayfield is the type of player a contending team like Green Bay can feel confident about inserting into the starting lineup right away to help keep their quarterback upright. Mayfield played in a pro-style college offense for Jim Harbaugh, so that helps.
Ultimately, this is a pick Packers fans may not get overly excited about, but one that could help Green Bay get past the likes of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC. As long as Tampa Bay has an incredible pass rush, it is imperative to have strength along your offensive line. Mayfield is not the sexy pick here for Green Bay but could be a selection that leads to them hoisting a Lombardi.
