Florida football: 3 former Gators who need an NFL team in 2021
Brian Poole
The pool of veteran cornerbacks in free agency this year is deep, which might explain why Brian Poole isn’t signed somewhere yet.
After five years in the league, Poole has proven he was worthy of a draft selection coming of out Florida in 2016 even though every team passed on him on draft weekend. He ended up playing for the Falcons to start his career before moving to the Jets in 2019.
He was having a great second season with the team before he injured his knee and shoulder, forcing him to miss the last seven games of the campaign.
Teams can take note of his two interceptions, seven pass breakups, two tackles for loss and 44 combined tackles in nine games when deciding if he’s worth bringing in for the 2021 season. Of course, they’ll also have to consider his recent injury woes.
Jeff Driskel
Sure, Driskel didn’t finish his career at Florida. He was still a Gator for four seasons. Now he’s trying to figure out what he’ll be in the NFL since he’s no longer a Bronco.
Denver recently cut the backup quarterback after one season with the team. He’d signed a two-year deal in 2020 to be Drew Lock’s backup but ended up being demoted from that role.
Can he find another team to give him a chance?
Driskel has started nine games over the last three seasons. However, he’s lost all but one of those. In his career, including stints with the Bengals and Lions, he has thrown for 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 58.6 percent of his passes. He has 2,120 career yards.
A cheap deal could make him worth the gamble.
