3 reasons Nikola Jokic should be the undisputed MVP
1. He’s been the best player in the NBA
Let’s finish up with the most obvious reason: Averaging 26.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game, Jokic has just simply been the best player in the NBA this season.
He has not missed a game and is nearly averaging a triple-double on the year. He is tied for 10th in points per game with Donovan Mitchell and is the only player in the group to play in more than 63 games as of Monday afternoon. Embiid ranks third in scoring, but in 49 total games.
Jokic is also sixth in the NBA in assists and ninth in rebounds. He’s shooting an absurdly efficient 56.6 percent from the field, 40.2 percent from deep and 86.3 percent from the foul line. Add in the fact he has held the Nuggets together through all the adversity and he is the clear choice for the award.
Even if Jokic has an off night from the floor, he is still dishing out assists and getting his teammates involved.
Someone like Steph Curry has the scoring numbers, but not the team success. Embiid has the team success, but he has not been around for all of it. Giannis Antetokounmpo is in a bit of a middle ground of being elite but has not been as available as Jokic, and let’s be honest, is probably going to suffer from voter fatigue after winning MVP the last two years. His numbers are also not as great.
Jokic has the chance this week to cap off a truly impressive MVP campaign. Voters should only look to him when it comes time to vote for the award.
