PGA Championship sleeper No. 3: Shane Lowry (+8000)

When you think of PGA Tour players who have been showing out this year, Shane Lowry probably isn’t the first player who comes to mind. And to be sure, the Irishman hasn’t registered a win, nor has been able to crack a top-five finish to this point.

Yet, Lowry has racked up two top-10 finishes in 14 starts while also making the top 25 on five occasions and only missing two cuts on the season. Yet, when you look at his game, he’s been hitting the ball pretty well everywhere outside of when he has to pull out the putter.

For the season, Lowry has ranked 38th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green but has been losing strokes per round with his putter. With the wind in play at Kiawah for the PGA Championship, I would much rather bank on the possibility of a hot putter with a player who is hitting the ball well otherwise.

Perhaps the biggest reason I’m circling Lowry, though, is his success at The Open Championship the last time it was played. His win in those blustery conditions gives me faith that he’s ready to handle any elements at the Ocean Course and, ultimately, compete for his second major championship.
