Jose Altuve just hit the weakest home run of the season (Video)
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve hit one of the shortest home runs possible against the Red Sox at Minute Maid Park.
When it comes to home runs, usually the longer and higher, the better. But those score just the same as the shortest possible.
Jose Altuve of the Astros made that clear when he hit a home run at Minute Maid Park that traveled 330 feet.
You can’t hit one much shorter than this.
It doesn’t make a difference for Altuve and the Astros, who extended their lead to 4-0 thanks to the two-run shot in the bottom of the third.
Jose Altuve’s 330-foot home run was among the shortest in 2021
Per Statcast, it was the shortest home run hit by an Astros player since Yordan Alvarez hit one 329 feet in 2019. This year it’s the second shortest homer in MLB, behind only J.D. Martinez’s home run of 326 feet.
It may have been one of the shortest home runs this year, but Altuve’s hit was nowhere near the shortest home run in MLB history. That’s a distinction held by the 24-inch home run allegedly hit by Andy Oyler in the early 1900s, which Matt Monagan wrote about for MLB.com earlier this year.
To be fair, it was an inside-the-park homer that dinked off his bat and into deep mud in front of home plate. Oyler made it all the way back home as the opposing players searched for the submerged ball. It’s also not entirely clear that play ever happened. It’s a good story, though.
The Astros and Red Sox just started a series on Monday. Houston is coming off a 1-2 series against the Padres. While they still sit second in the AL behind Oakland, they have lost six of their last eight games.
