The Texas Longhorns and the Tennessee Volunteers are both looking to stay alive in the 2021 College World Series.

The College World Series hasn’t started out great for the two highest remaining seeds in the 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament. Both Texas and Tennessee were given heartbreaking losses during their first games in Omaha.

But the two losses couldn’t have been more different.

Texas had an opportunity to take control of its destiny and win but was stymied by stellar pitching. Tennessee simply let things slowly unravel and get out of control. The Longhorns only lost by one run, though it seemed nearly impossible for Texas to get back into its game up until the final three outs.

The Vols, on the other hand, lost by six.

Even though Texas lost by just one run, the Longhorns were unable to get anything that resembled an offense going against Mississippi State. Texas struck out for a College World Series record 21 times against the Bulldogs.

Against Virginia, Tennessee was able to get some contact and some runners on base, but things slipped away during the top of the seventh inning as the Cavaliers scored four runs, which prevented the Vols from ever having a chance to get back into the game.

And now, both UT and, well, UT, will face each other. The winner moves on to play another day. Loser heads home. Here’s what you need to know.

Now, the winner of this contest will move on to face whoever loses between the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Virginia Cavaliers. Meanwhile, the loser will head back home as their season will come to a close.

It seems unlikely that either of these teams thought that their season would come to a close at this point in the College World Series. The Longhorns and Volunteers are the two remaining top seeds in the 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament. These two groups had national championship aspirations and potential.

Unfortunately for the teams and their fans, both Texas and Tennessee are now facing elimination. Get ready to watch the Longhorns and Vols play on ESPN2.
