3 Dallas Mavericks players who won’t be back next season
1. Josh Richardson
Josh Richardson came to the Dallas Mavericks in the 2020 offseason from the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Seth Curry. He had a decent regular season, posting 12.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 30.3 minutes per game. He started all but three of his 59 appearances but was relegated to the bench come playoff time. Richardson struggled off the bench, and his playoff averages were far below his regular-season output as result.
The Mavericks and Richardson chose not to enter into contract extension discussions. Passing on that extension gives Richardson the ability to decline his player option for next season and become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Essentially, he can potentially cash in for more than the $11.6 million he’s owed in base salary next year.
Even with his reduced playoff productivity, our guess is Richardson will want to test the market. The Mavs probably won’t want to offer him enough given Luka Doncic’s impending supermax contract extension and Tim Hardaway Jr.’s free agency, so he’s likely headed elsewhere.
