The Euros produced madness on Monday as Switzerland knocked out defending World Champion France, who blew a 3-1 lead.

It turns out Euro 2020 was absolutely worth the wait. After an entertaining group stage, the knockout rounds got kicked up a notch on Monday, thanks to some incredible comebacks.

Croatia erased a 1-3 deficit to force extra time with Spain, but ultimately the Spaniards prevailed.

A nearly identical scenario played out as France took a 3-1 lead over Switzerland. The Swiss fought back in the final 10 minutes to take the game to extra time tied at 3-3. Unlike Croatia, they held on for penalties and then grabbed a victory for the ages thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s miss.

Who could have seen this one coming?

France blew a 3-1 lead as Switzerland knocked them out of Euro 2020

The agony and ecstasy of sport became perfectly embodied by one Swiss fan.

Twitter was all about the wordplay.

This Swiss team was just made of different stuff.

Since they’re a global soccer power at the moment, France’s failure brought joy to a whole lot of people on Twitter.

Mostly, the internet wasn’t going to let France forget that they blew a 3-1 lead. If you’re a fan of the 76ers, Leafs or any other team whose done the same, beware. The comparisons were endless.

Who is next?

With the defending World Cup champions, France, and the defending Euro winners, Portugal, knocked out of the tournament, the entire complexion of the bracket has changed. Belgium, England and Italy see a way home. Underdogs are chomping at the bit. It’s anyone’s tournament.

The Swiss will be one of those potential Cinderella stories to watch. They’ll take on Spain in the quarterfinals. It should be another wild ride.
