MLB Trades: Miami Marlins are having a FIRE (sale)

The Miami Marlins appear to be among the sellers at the upcoming MLB trade deadline, and they’ve gotten a head start with these moves.

And so it begins, the Miami Marlins have begun the first of potentially many moves in the upcoming weeks as part of a roster overhaul.

It’s reported that Miami is trading outfielder Corey Dickerson and reliever Adam Cimber to the Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Joe Panik and a minor-league pitcher, per MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal.

The Marlins looked like a team on the rise last summer after reaching the postseason for the first time since 2003. It’s been a big step backward for Miami this season, as the team currently sits dead last in the NL East with a 33-44, 8.5 games out of first place and 12.5 games behind a Wild Card spot.

It’s a bit odd the Marlins are in last place given they have the best run differential (+17) in their division and the fifth-best in the National League, but Miami just hasn’t been able to put together consistent winning streaks throughout the season.

The Miami Marlins are getting a head start on trades.

Dickerson is slashing .260/.321/.377 with two home runs and 14 RBI in 224 at-bats. The 32-year-old is in the final season of a two-year, $17.5 million deal. Moving Dickerson will give more opportunities for the team’s younger options including Miami’s No.5 prospect Jesus Sanchez.

Cimber has posted a 2.88 ERA and 1.194 WHIP across 34.1 innings this season. The right-hander was the most-often used reliever for the Marlins in 2021.

In return, Miami will receive Panik who is slashing .246/.293/.351 with two home runs and 11 RBI in 114 at-bats this season. He’s an eight-year veteran who should help give the team some depth with third baseman Brian Anderson on the 60-day IL.  However, don’t be surprised if Panik is flipped again in the upcoming weeks. He’ll be a free agent in the offseason and doesn’t appear to fit in the team’s future plans.

Joining him in a trade this season could be outfielder Starling Marte. He’ll be Miami’s biggest asset at the deadline and could play a key role in retooling their roster.
