3 pitchers Yankees need to trade for at deadline to save their season
By John Buhler
Kyle Gibson is in the midst of a career year with the Texas Rangers
You know what, why not? The Yankees are in need of a strong pitcher, and no pitcher is performing better on a bad team the Kyle Gibson of the Texas Rangers. The long-time Twins starting pitcher is in his second season with the Rangers. Despite being in last place in the AL West standings, Gibson is 6-0 on the year in 16 starts with a league-best ERA of 1.98 and an ERA+ of 226.
The 33-year-old right-hander is under contract through the 2022 MLB season before hitting free agency ahead of his age-35 season out of Missouri. While the Yankees would be trading for a pitcher who is massively outperforming his career numbers, he is the hot hand for the Rangers this year. His trade value is massive, and the Rangers organization is well aware of it being so.
In short, the Yankees would get an immediate impact starter and one who would contribute as a vibrant part of next year’s staff. Even more important, the Yankees would not have to give up as much as they would for a player like Berrios. Yes, they will have to give up perhaps a tad more than they will have wanted, but the Rangers do have all the leverage if they do put Gibson on the block.
Overall, the Yankees need to look at acquiring starters who are pitching well on bad teams with only a handful of years left on their contract. Yes, they can go all-in on a rental like Max Scherzer of the Washington Nationals, but adding a guy like Berrios, Gibson or Marquez will not only help them get back in the AL East race this year, but help them contend for a division title next season.
What other starting pitching options should the Yankees consider adding to save their season?
