1. Oakland Athletics

The A’s lineup has been severely lacking at the designated hitter spot, and it’s the one true hole — minus the bullpen — this team has as they try to contend for a playoff spot.

The A’s are also in on Cruz, but it’s unlike Billy Beane to make a major swing at the trade deadline, even for a rental. Mercedes has more long-term potential and could start right away at DH. With the pressure off in Oakland, Yermin could contribute to a potential playoff.

The A’s won’t want to absorb whatever remains of Cruz’s contract, making Mercedes a more attractive option anyway. Mercedes is on a minor-league salary of just $570,000.

Mercedes’ trade options are potentially limited to the American League since he’s primarily a DH. Hence, sending a player with his potential to Oakland is a bit of a problem for the White Sox.

But if there truly is something brewing under the surface between Mercedes and La Russa, getting rid of him now before the postseason makes sense.
