Fernando Tatis Jr. pulling away in NL MVP race with another home run (Video)
San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. became the first player in the National League to reach 30 home runs this season.
As we reach the final two months of the regular season, it’s becoming more clear with each passing game who the NL MVP might be: Fernando Tatis Jr.
The first-time All-Star added to his already impressive stat line with his National League-leading 30th home run of the season on Saturday against the Marlins.
Heading into Saturday’s contests, Tatis owns a slash line of .290/.371/.643 with 29 (now 30) home runs and 66 RBIs in 342 plate appearances. Aside from his league-leading 30 homers, Tatis also leads the NL with 23 stolen bases, a .643 slugging percentage, and a 1.014 OPS. He also has the highest WAR in the National League (4.4 2nd-MLB), and the NL’s second-highest wRC+ (164), just one point behind Max Muncy.
Fernando Tatis Jr. is running away in the NL MVP race
It won’t be easy for the rest of the league to overtake Tatis, and assuming the Padres finish the season strong with a postseason birth it should add bonus points to his MVP consideration depending on the voters.
Regardless, if he continues this offensive pace there is no player in the National League more valuable than Tatis.
