3 Yankees who won’t be back next season if they miss the playoffs
Anthony Rizzo
Anthony Rizzo didn’t take long to ingratiate himself to Yankees fans after being traded from the Cubs, even if he did end up on the COVID-19 list after just nine games. His winning smile combined with a debut home run and an OPS of .963 did the trick.
However, Rizzo came to New York as a rental with his contract up at the end of the year. He was never guaranteed to stick around.
A playoff run might do the trick to convince him there’s something to be a part of with the Yankees. October baseball in pinstripes could be just magical enough to give him a reason to stay.
Missing out on the playoffs wouldn’t be pretty, though. Rizzo would quickly be exposed to the downside of being in the New York media spotlight. The attraction of staying in the Big Apple could be undercut significantly.
Rizzo will have plenty of options on the free-agent market. The Yankees have a limited window to make a strong, positive impression on him.
