Errol Spence Jr. out against Manny Pacquiao, Yordenis Ugas in
Errol Spence Jr. is out of his welterweight title fight against Manny Pacquiao on Aug. 21. WBA champion Yordenis Ugas will take his place.
Word is out that WBC and IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. is out of his Aug. 21 championship boxing bout against the legendary Manny Pacquiao after suffering an injury. It’s terrible news, but there’s still a fight card for that date.
WBA champion Yordenis Ugas was supposed to fight Fabian Maidana on the undercard of Spence vs. Pacquiao but will take Spence’s place against Pacquiao. Ugas’ WBA title will be on the line.
Spence announced through a press release that he suffered a retinal tear that requires surgery immediately.
Manny Pacquiao has a new opponent in Yordenis Ugas after Errol Spence Jr. was forced to pull out of their Aug. 21 bout due to a torn retina
“I’m very disappointed that I won’t be able to fight Manny Pacquiao on August 21,’’ Spence said in the press release. “I was excited about the fight and the event. Unfortunately, the doctors found a tear in my left eye and said I needed to get surgery on it ASAP and that there was no way I could fight with my eye in that condition. I’d like to apologize to everyone. You know I’ll be back as soon back soon. We’ve come back from worse.’’
Ugas vs. Pacquiao will now headline the Aug. 21 fight card from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Ugas won the vacant WBA “regular” belt in September after defeating Abel Ramos via split decision. He was elevated to full champion after Pacquiao was stripped of his “champion in recess” status. Pacquiao will now get a chance to get his old title back.
“First and foremost, I ask everyone to join me in praying for a full and complete recovery for Errol Spence Jr.,’’ Pacquiao said in the press release. “Thank God his physical examination discovered his eye condition before he suffered any further damage. I have agreed to fight Yordenis Ugas on August 21 for the WBA welterweight super championship. The proper way and the only way to win a world title is inside the ring.”
