Red Sox: 2 prospect call ups that must happen in September
By Scott Rogust
Again, the starting rotation gets addressed, as Tanner Houck is deserving of a call-up.
Houck has split time between Boston and Triple-A Pawtucket this season. When suiting up for the Red Sox, the right-hander has looked good on the mound. Through eight games, Houck owns a 2.93 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and 44 strikeouts over 30.2 innings of work.
The 25-year-old last pitched back on Thursday, where he struck out eight batters and surrendered three earned runs on six hits in Boston’s 8-1 loss to Tampa Bay. Following that game, the Red Sox optioned Houck back to Triple-A after they activated trade deadline acquisition Kyle Schwarber from the injured list and reinstated outfielder Alex Verdugo from the paternity leave list.
Despite him being sent down, it seems as though Red Sox manager Alex Cora envisions Houck returning to the major league roster soon.
“Probably not, for now. But, yeah, he’ll be with us soon, I guess,” Cora said, via Sean T. McGuire of NESN. “We still have some flexibility in the roster in the upcoming days. That’s something we’re going to talk with Chaim (Bloom) and the the group when we’re done with you guys. But he’s still contributing. He’ll contribute again soon with us, put it that way.”
Houck getting called up to Boston again this season seems like a legitimately safe bet — and for good reason.
