Chris Bassitt releases emotional statement after getting hit in game

Oakland Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt released a thankful statement on Twitter after being hit in the face by a line drive.

Chris Bassitt has a great deal to feel thankful for today.

The Athletics pitcher was hit in the face by a line drive while pitching against the White Sox on Tuesday and had to be carted off the field. It was one of the scariest moments in a long while, with the whole baseball world hoping for good news.

On Wednesday afternoon, Bassitt released a statement on Twitter sharing his thoughts on the situation for the first time publically.

“From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to thank the @whitesox and @Athletics staff, front offices, and owners. The support my family and I’ve received has been overwhelming. I’d also like to thank Rush University Medical Center and their staff,” Bassitt tweeted. “God is good. Can’t wait to get back!”

Chris Bassitt suffered fractures but escaped any damage to his vision

Bassitt’s tweet was a huge relief on the heels of some great updates on Wednesday morning.

Jon Heyman reported that Bassitt suffered a fractured cheekbone and upper jawbone. When the swelling subsides, he’ll undergo surgery. As bad as that sounds, it could have been much worse. Fortunately, all other scans came back clean and his vision was not affected.

Bassitt was facing Brian Goodwin in the second inning when the batter made contact and sent a line drive straight for the mound. It’s one of those things every pitcher and their families fear. Unfortunately, the ball made contact with the side of Bassitt’s face. He went down immediately and had to be carted off the field with a towel pressed against his cheek, thankfully fully conscious throughout.

The 32-year-old was having the best season of his career with a 12-4 record, an ERA of 3.22 and his first All-Star nod.
