Chicago Bears: Matt Nagy’s quote on Justin Fields won’t help his case
By Josie Rohach
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is facing some serious criticism for his comments after playing quarterback Andy Dalton over Justin Fields against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Chicago Bears lost on Sunday night 34-14 to the Los Angeles Rams. One of their touchdowns came from a three-yard rush by rookie quarterback Justin Fields late in the third quarter.
This is the same Justin Fields that the bears drafted No.11 overall earlier this year. It is also the same Justin Fields that sat on the Chicago sideline for most of the game as Andy Dalton threw for a mediocre 206 yards with no touchdowns, an interception and a fumble.
Before the game, Bears fans were upset with Nagy for not starting Fields. During the game, Bears fans were really upset with Nagy for not giving Fields more snaps. Now, after his postgame comments, Bears fans might be ready to find a new head coach all together.
Bears head coach Matt Nagy added insult to injury with his comment about Justin Fields.
A weapon? Fields scored the only touchdown by a Bears quarterback. He’s a first round pick in a stacked quarterback class. He is more than just a weapon–and Bears fans aren’t having it.
Based on his comments, it doesn’t sound like Nagy has any plans to start Justin Fields in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. That means Dalton is going to have to put together an immaculate performance if he has any hopes of winning over Chicago fans who seem to have tunnel vision for Fields.
All of this controversy also puts a lot of pressure on the young Fields. Fans have already deemed him the worthy starter and the answer to their problems at quarterback. He has to continue to play at a high level and take advantage of the few snaps he’s given, or Chicago might find themselves with more problems than just their head coach.
