Joe Ryan dodges a bullet after taking line drive off his wrist in scary moment (Video)
By Mark Powell
Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan appears to be okay after removing himself from his outing against the Cleveland Indians.
Ryan was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in the Nelson Cruz trade, and had been phenomenal for the Twins up until this point. Ryan was perfect in 10 of the first 12 innings he pitched in the big leagues, and didn’t allow any runs in 11 of those outings.
Considering the Twins were so obviously going to trade the 41-year-old Cruz in the first place, it’s not a bad get for a Minnesota team suffering an off year, to say the least.
Yet, Ryan suffered a scare against Cleveland on Tuesday afternoon, taking a line drive off his wrist.
Initially, the prognosis wasn’t great, given Ryan didn’t even wait for trainers to come out of the game.
Twins: Joe Ryan in good spirits after being removed from game
Per Twins reporter Do-Hyoung Park, Ryan didn’t seem all that worried about the injury postgame.
“Joe Ryan was in good spirits as he talked to us. Said it was more shock than pain. Even started by apologizing for how he walked off the field, saying it ‘set a bad example’ and should have been “more professional,'” Park wrote on Twitter.
Ryan went on to say he should be fine minus a few seam marks on his wrist and some initial pain. He was even making jokes.
Hopefully, the Twins pitcher can put this scare behind him and move forward.
