The San Diego Padres have a scapegoat if they are to miss out on the postseason, and that person is manager Jayce Tingler.

The San Diego Padres were supposed to make a run for not only the NL West crown this season, but had a strong chance of representing the National League in the World Series. They certainly looked good through the first half of the year, but they have since collapsed in spectacular fashion.

Entering this weekend with an important series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Padres suffered a three-game sweep. With that, the Padres fell down to 3.5 games behind the Cardinals for the final NL Wild Card spot. If the Padres are to miss out on the postseason, there is a clear scapegoat, and his name is manager Jayce Tingler.

After falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Division Series last year, the Padres went scorched earth in the offseason by acquiring starting pitchers Blake Snell, Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove to pair alongside their explosive hitters. They looked like the favorites to make the Fall Classic.

It really seemed as though the Padres were cursed after they missed out on acquiring Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer at the trade deadline. Instead, the Dodgers jumped in front of them and not only traded for Scherzer, but shortstop Trea Turner as well.

Since the trade deadline, the Padres have gone 16-28 and have fallen well out of the division race. After the Cardinals’ sweep, San Diego has fallen behind the likes of Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds. Injuries have played a role in their collapse, especially in their starting rotation

Things do not get any easier for the Padres and Tingler, as they play six games against the San Francisco Giants, three against the Atlanta Braves and three versus the Dodgers to finish off the season.

Given that the Padres failed to live up to their lofty expectations prior to the season, Tingler may very well be the fall guy, even though he helped lead this team to the postseason last year.
