Buck Showalter could be the Yankees’ equivalent of hiring Tony La Russa

While in most instances reaching into one’s past is not a great thing, especially when that past was not all that great, it seems to have worked out well for the Chicago White Sox by hiring former their former skipper Tony La Russa. Yes, the game has changed a lot since he last managed the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals, but guess what? The White Sox ran away with the AL Central.

No, we are not asking to bring back Joe Torre to manage this lost ballclub, though that may not be the worst idea ever. Instead, why not consider giving his predecessor Buck Showalter another stab at leading the Bronx Bombers? Showalter has had good, but not great success managing any number of clubs over the years, most recently with the Baltimore Orioles from 2010 to 2018.

Prior to Showalter taking over in the Charm City, the Orioles were flightless, much like they are now in the three years since they have been without him. He had the Orioles vying for a World Series berth as recently as 2014. That team was nowhere near as talented as what the Yankees have now. At the very least, Showalter will get an underperforming team into shape very quickly.

The downside to bringing Showalter back to the Yankees is two-fold: One, he is 65-years-old and has had an excellent career away from the diamond as a broadcaster and a baseball analyst. And two, he has only guided five of the 20 big-league teams he has managed to the postseason, never going further than the 2014 ALCS where the Orioles were swept by the Kansas City Royals, 4-0.
