player. Bench Coach. Houston Astros. Joe Espada. 1. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. 135

Joe Espada had been on the Yankees coaching staff before his current role

Even if there is stigma associated to the Houston Astros, it is important to know that their bench coach Joe Espada did not arrive there until 2018. When Houston was stealing signs en route to its first World Series title in 2017, Espada had been the Yankees’ third base and infield coach. He came to The Bronx in 2015 after having been with the Florida/Miami Marlins organization.

Espada had been in pinstripes under Boone’s predecessor Girardi. While he did not get to experience playing winning the AL pennant at any point during his initial Yankees run, Espada had been a part of three winning coaching staffs and saw two qualify for the postseason. Simply put, Espada might be able to rekindle some of that firepower the Yankees had prior to Boone’s arrival.

Coaching in Houston will have helped Espada prepare for potentially taking over in a major media market like New York. When you work for baseball’s villain franchise, you can handle anything. Houston played in the ALCS last year in its first season post scandal, and should compete for another postseason berth out there in the AL West. At 45-years-old, Espada might be ready for it.

Overall, the Yankees could go in a lot of directions this offseason if they do part ways with Boone. They can pry a well-thought-of coach away from a division rival, they can reach into their past to find that spark once again and they can bring in one of their own when one of their own is no longer working out. Whatever happens to the Yankees this winter, it will be utterly fascinating.

Who should the Yankees consider bringing in as manager if they need to move off Boone?
