Luke Voit, 1B

The Yankees have a difficult choice to make this offseason when it comes to first base.

Luke Voit was the AL leader in home runs in the 2020 season and looked like a steal when the team acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 in exchange for relief pitcher Chasen Schreve. This year, however, Voit struggled to stay on the field due to injuries.

At the trade deadline, the Yankees made the big splash to acquire Anthony Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs and provided an immediate spark for the team. That caused Voit, even when healthy, to be relegated to a pinch-hitter on the team. Rizzo was even responsible for the Yankees’ first run in the Wild Card game (one of two, I might add), thanks to a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Rizzo is set to become a free agent and will no doubt be heavily sought-after during the Hot Stove season. Yet, you can not rule out New York pulling a power play to sign him to a long-term contract. Not only that, but the team can always move D.J. LeMahieu to first base, like he did at the start of his Yankees career.

The team did reportedly try to trade Voit at the deadline, so it will not be surprising if they actually make the move this winter.
