Toronto Raptors: What can Scottie Barnes give them?

There’s a solid argument to be made that the performance of Pascal Siakam should be the question here, but Nick Nurse’s clear infatuation with Barnes makes him the more interesting discussion.

The title-winning head coach has made it clear that the former FSU star will have a “huge role” as a rookie. He may not crack Toronto’s starting lineup anytime soon, but he’s in line for major minutes with the second unit at a variety of positions.

Barnes’ ability to find a way to become a consistent offensive contributor will define his success as a rookie. A big part of that plan should be building chemistry with backup point guard Goran Dragic. Expect to see the Raptors try to push the pace with their second unit to unlock Barnes’ transition game.

The challenge with Barnes’ initial fit is whether or not he can become a respectable outside shooter this early in his career. If he can, his plus athleticism should flourish under Nurse’s tutelage. If not, he may turn into an intriguing flop for a franchise that really needs to find one more star.
