College football rankings 2021: Week 9 AP Top 25 projections after Ohio State, Alabama win; Oklahoma State, Penn State lose

12. Penn State Nittany Lions

This is probably where the drop ends for Penn State. It’s hard to see them cycling back to the front of the Big Ten East race given another conference loss at this point.

They needed nine overtimes to lose but they did and it was a tough one. How they respond will be interesting, but it doesn’t get any easier as they go on the road to take on Ohio State. If they lose that one, then the Nittany Lions will see a fall in the rankings.

11. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Fighting Irish should be on the doorstep of the top 10. Notre Dame handled USC at home and should move ahead of both the Nittany Lions and Cowboys. Notre Dame’s only loss so far is still to second-ranked Cincinnati.

Right now, the resume of the Irish isn’t that bad all things considered. They’re angling for a big game and handling teams they should beat is the right recipe, even if they struggled early with Florida State and Toledo.
