Dolphins have competition in trading for Deshaun Watson
By John Buhler
Deshaun Watson to the Miami Dolphins is no longer a foregone conclusion at this point for the Houston Texans quarterback.
While the Houston Texans are expected to trade quarterback Deshaun Watson before the Nov. 2 deadline, there are other teams in the mix for the former first-round pick besides the Miami Dolphins.
The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on Good Morning Football Monday that there are a few other teams interested in dealing for the former Clemson star. While the Philadelphia Eagles have long been a team tied to Watson, the Carolina Panthers being in the mix for him is very interesting. Charlotte is not far from Clemson or Watson’s hometown of Gainesville, Georgia.
So is Watson taking his talents to South Beach, the City of Brotherly Love or even the Queen City?
Deshaun Watson trade rumors: Dolphins being pushed by Eagles, Panthers
If Watson were dealt to Miami, the thought is Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa will not be going to Houston. He would go somewhere like the Denver Broncos or the Washington Football Team in a potential three-team deal involving Watson. As for a deal with the Eagles, it is important to note that current Philadelphia starter Jalen Hurts is a Houston area native and a former college star.
While one would think Hurts would be going Houston’s direction in a deal for Watson, was does it say about Sam Darnold now that the Panthers are being mentioned? The former failed New York Jets starter looked horrendous for Carolina in Sunday’s brutal road loss to the New York Giants at MetLife. He got benched for one of Matt Rhule’s Temple guys P.J. Walker. That speaks volumes.
Miami should still feel good about its chances to strike a deal, but the Texans have other suitors.
