How many teams make the College Football Playoff?

How many teams make the College Football Playoff each season? Will that number change in the near future?
While college football historically has a unique, eclectic, and fun relationship with crowning a national champion, things have become more structured and straightforward in recent years. With the College Football Playoff, a committee chooses a handful of teams to play in a couple of semifinal games and then the national title game.
As it currently stands, only four teams are selected by the committee to compete in the College Football Playoff in any given season, but there’s a chance that this number could change in the somewhat near future.
Will the College Football Playoff expand to include more teams?
There is a growing movement to expand the CFP to include more teams as many fans, teams, and coaches would like to see other schools get a shot to compete for the national championship in any given year.
There is generally a debate on how much the playoff should expand, but many who are invested in college football believe that an expansion should happen. Two current proposals that seem popular among many would be to expand to either eight or 12 teams. But, as ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports, formal talks of expansion have been tabled for a little while.
While an expansion seems inevitable, it remains to be seen what sort of playoff expansion will actually unfold.
