The Los Angeles Rams could get one of their premier players on offense back for the playoffs.
After defeating the Seattle Seahawks 20-10 this past Tuesday, the Los Angeles Rams are now in a tie with the Arizona Cardinals for first-place in the NFC West. With a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings upcoming, the Rams got some good news regarding the status of one of their top players on offense.
On Thursday, the Rams designated running back Cam Akers to return, which will open up the 21-day activation window. Akers is on his way back after tearing his Achilles tendon back in July.
Rams designate Cam Akers to return from Achilles injury
An Akers return for the Rams in the regular season is still a mystery. Head coach Sean McVay told the media on Thursday that there is no specific timeline as to when Akers will be activated.
Akers was coming off an impressive rookie season with the Rams last year. The second-round pick out of Florida State appeared in 13 games for Los Angeles, and earned 5 starts. In total, Akers ran for 625 yards and two touchdowns on 145 carries, while also catching 11-of-14 targets for 123 yards and a touchdown.
With training camp on the horizon, Akers was expected to have a big second year with the NFC contenders. Unfortunately, he tore his Achilles tendon during private workouts in July. Originally expected to be done for the year, Akers is on the verge of returning from the serious injury just five months later.
Akers’ status will be worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks. Much like they did for the majority of this season, Los Angeles will continue to use Darrell Henderson Jr. and Sony Michel until they feel Akers is ready to suit up.
