Greg McElroy makes an obvious selection between Alabama and Georgia for the national title.

As a surprise to absolutely no one, former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy is picking his alma mater to beat Georgia … again …. this time for another national title.

“I cannot pick Georgia in this game, I’ll make my pick now. I’m picking Alabama, I don’t know how you can pick Georgia,” said McElroy on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning on Monday.

“I understand why people might be able to see through that, but man, I’ve also witnessed Bama beat Georgia convincingly a few times. I just can’t go that far. I understand it, I get it, but, I can’t make that decision.”

Had McElroy picked against his alma mater, that might have been a greater cause for concern.

Greg McElroy picks Alabama to beat Georgia to win the College Football Playoff

In layman’s terms, McElroy picked Alabama over Georgia because Bama’s gonna Bama. He might be a Rhodes Scholar, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why the former game-manager quarterback is going with his alma mater. What has he seen out of Georgia to make him be worried about the Dawgs? Alabama has the massive quarterbacking advantage in this game.

However, there are reasons why Georgia is the slight favorite to win this game. It’s not by much, but the line opening up in Georgia’s favor despite the Dawgs getting pummeled by the Crimson Tide in Atlanta only a month ago is telling. It means the oddsmakers believe the SEC Championship game was the anomaly and that the more talented team, Georgia, should conceivably prevail.

Ultimately, you’d be a fool to not take Alabama getting points. There is no such thing as free money, but this about as close as one gets to it. However, Georgia looked like its dominant self vs. Michigan in the Orange Bowl and it is so incredibly difficult to beat the same team twice in a season. For one of Nick Saban’s weaker Alabama teams to win it all, that is what must happen.

It may not be the matchup the college football world wants, but these are the two best teams.
