4. Top free-agent wide receivers: Mike Williams

Talented young wide receivers will always get paid in free agency even if their production doesn’t match the money they can command. This year’s example is Mike Williams, who has pedigree as a former first-round pick that has struggled with consistency throughout his NFL career.

The Los Angeles Chargers got the best out of Williams in his contract year as he set career-highs in receptions (76) and receiving yards (1,146). Williams also added nine touchdowns as he formed a good rapport with second-year quarterback Justin Herbert, who targeted Williams 129 times during the regular season.

The challenge with projecting Williams as a free agent is that he would mix games where he looked uncoverable, such as Week 5’s 8-165-2 explosion against the Cleveland Browns, with pedestrian efforts like Week 6’s 2 catch, 27-yard effort against Baltimore.

Despite that inconsistency, Williams is just 27 years old and will be paid handsomely coming off of a career year. It remains to be seen whether a team paying Williams as a No. 1 receiver will get their money’s worth or be disappointed.
