4. Top free-agent landing spots for Jameis Winston – Carolina Panthers

Winston has spent the entirety of his NFL career in the NFC South with an underwhelming five-year run in Tampa Bay coming prior to his stint in New Orleans. There is another team in the division that could use some help at quarterback which could make a landing spot in Carolina intriguing.

Matt Rhule has failed to find a long-term quarterback over the past few years, giving up on Teddy Bridgewater after one season and seeing a trade for Sam Darnold backfire when the former No. 3 overall pick from the 2018 draft regressed after a strong start to the season. The Panthers even went back to the future by bringing back Cam Newton at midseason but the move did little to spark the offense.

Winston represents an upgrade over Carolina’s current quarterback situation and should easily be able to beat out Darnold in a camp competition. This year’s quarterback class is also weak, meaning it would make little sense for a coach eager to win now to gamble on a rookie who doesn’t have the same pedigree as last year’s draft class.

The offensive setup is ideal for Winston in Carolina since the Panthers have an excellent collection of weapons headlined by Christian McCaffrey and D.J. Moore. Winston would also love the opportunity to continue getting revenge against the Buccaneers, who moved on for him in favor of Tom Brady after the 2019 season.
