Jameis Winston figures to be one of the top free-agent quarterbacks on the market. These five teams would be a good fit for the former No. 1 pick.

The quarterback market could have a lot of dominoes in motion this offseason. While the headlines will focus on potential trades for stars like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo, there is an intriguing free-agent option on the board in Jameis Winston.

The former No. 1 overall pick from 2015 spent the last two years with the New Orleans Saints, where he played behind Drew Brees in 2020 before ascending to the starting role in 2021. A torn ACL ended Winston’s season and likely cost the Saints the playoffs, but he had played well enough to offer some promise for teams in need of an upgrade under center. Let’s take a look at five teams that could make a play for Winston, beginning in with the newly-named Commanders.

5. Top free-agent landing spots for Jameis Winston – Washington Commanders

Few teams in the NFL have been as desperate to find a competent quarterback than Washington. After getting to the playoffs in 2020 with Alex Smith and Taylor Heinicke under center, Washington brought in Ryan Fitzpatrick last winter to provide a bridge to a longer-term solution.

The bridge ended up not being built as Fitzpatrick was lost for the season with a hip injury in Week 1, leaving Heinicke to become the de facto starter for the remainder of the year. Subpar quarterback play sunk Washington’s chances to repeat as NFC East champions so making a play for Winston makes a ton of sense.

The Commanders can offer Winston a bona fide No. 1 receiver in Terry McLaurin and the chance to win with a defense that should perform better after a down 2021 campaign. Winston would also have little resistance to the starting job in Washington, which has to appeal to him after jockeying for reps with Taysom Hill last season.
