Former Bears head coach Matt Nagy finds new job in familiar place

Matt Nagy has resurfaced as the next quarterbacks coach of the Kansas City Chiefs after being fired as the former head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy has found a new job in a familiar place with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs have hired Nagy to be their new senior assistant/quarterbacks coach. Prior to taking over the Bears in 2018, Nagy had served on Andy Reid’s Chiefs staff since its inception in 2013. The former Philadelphia Eagles practice squad player began his coaching career for Reid in 2009 after retiring. In short, he has only worked for Reid when he was not leading his own franchise.

With Eric Bieniemy staying on as offensive coordinator, Nagy effectively replaces Mike Kafka as the Chiefs quarterbacks coach, who now coordinates the offense for Brian Daboll’s New York Giants.

This felt like an inevitably once Nagy was let go in Chicago. Though there was some thought that he would replace Bieniemy if he left after this season, he will work alongside him in Kansas City. While the good news with Nagy going back to the Chiefs if him having great familiarity with the Kansas City organization, it also might signify he was not all that hirable elsewhere to begin with.

It would have been interesting if Nagy linked up with another Reid disciple such as Sean McDermott in Buffalo, Ron Rivera in Washington or now Doug Pederson in Jacksonville. By returning to Kansas City, this kind of feels like Matt Patricia and Joe Judge running back to Bill Belichick in New England after things went over terribly in their first stabs as NFL head coaches.

By working with familiar faces in Kansas City, Nagy begins rehabilitating his NFL coaching image.
