Washington has been linked with a number of quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, but Watson is a superior on-field talent compared to any potential rookie heading into next season. Ron Rivera isn’t under the same pressure to win immediately as Rhule, but officials in Washington believe the bones of their roster are ready to make a leap in the NFC East.

The Commanders don’t have great skill on offense at the moment, but adding Watson to the mix could cover up a lot of those ills. He was universally praised during his tenure with the Texans for racking up yards and points despite a quality supporting cast. Moving to Washington might not be Watson’s first choice in terms of on-field teammates, but Rivera’s previous work with Cam Newton could excite the talented quarterback from a stylistic point.

Washington does have the necessary draft capital to make a deal happen if they’re sufficiently motivated. There are understandable questions over whether or not the Commanders franchise can absorb the public relations blow that would accompany acquiring Watson.

Owner Daniel Snyder is already being investigated by the NFL over allegations of misconduct by former team employee Tiffani Johnston. Bringing in a player with the type of off-the-field issues that face Watson at the moment might be too much for Washington to stand.
