Melvin Ingram and Alex Okafor could both leave the Chiefs via free agency which makes the idea of Kansas City grabbing a talented edge-rusher in Round 1 a logical proposition for the team’s front office. Karlaftis isn’t the most explosive pass-rusher in this draft class, but he might be the most powerful.

The strength he shows at the line of scrimmage allows him to project as a quality two-way defensive end at the NFL level. The Chiefs need pass-rushing help but they could also stand to get better against the run. Drafting Karlaftis at No. 30 would give them help in both areas.

Karlaftis also has the versatility to play as an edge on early downs before kicking inside to be an interior pass-rusher on third down. That kind of flexibility could help Kansas City maximize their dollars in free agency to get even stronger up front.

There are several teams picking just ahead of the Chiefs who are also looking for help on the edge which makes it very possible that Karlaftis goes off the board before Kansas City goes on the clock. If he slips to 30, he’ll be a strong consideration for the Chiefs.
