The Pittsburgh Steelers are making moves at the linebacker position, signing Myles Jack to a two-year deal and releasing Joe Schobert.

The Steelers have been active since the start of NFL free agency, adding to their haul in a big way on Wednesday.

Pittsburgh agreed to sign former Jaguars linebacker Myles Jack to a two-year deal worth $16 million, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Since Jack is just 26 years old, the Steelers are hoping he bounces back from recent performances and returns to the form of 2018, when he was one of the most promising young linebackers in the game.

Steelers take a chance on Myles Jack living up to potential

Bringing in Jack should have a ripple effect on the defense, including the expected release of starting linebacker Joe Schobert.

The Steelers traded a sixth-round pick to Jacksonville for Schobert last year and he started 15 games for them in 2021. He had 112 tackles and an interception. However, the team wanted to get more athletic at the position. Jack solves that problem.

Jack had 108 tackles last season but his impact was limited, with no sacks or interceptions to show for his presence on the field. Even though he was under contract until 2024, Jacksonville opted to get him off their books by releasing him.

A fresh start could be all Jack needs to live up to his high potential. The Steelers have the chance to unlock it.

Jack will pair up with Devin Bush as Pittsburgh settles into life with Ben Roethlisberger. A reliable defense would be the best way to make life easier for Mitchell Trubisky or whichever quarterback wins the starting job.
