In three games, Albert Pujols has yet to record his first hit in his return to the St. Louis Cardinals. Is there any reason for fans to be concerned?

In short, no. Pujols isn’t what he used to be and the Cards are employing him exactly as he should at this point in his career — a designated hitter against left-handed pitching, and a capable bat off the bench.

Is there a chance for that role to expand? Of course. Will it right now? No.

Pujols got off to a dreadful start last season with the Los Angeles Angels, as well. It wasn’t until he was released and signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers that he turned things around. The difference between those two gigs is that with the Dodgers, very little was expected of him, and Pujols was able to perform in a limited capacity in a pressure-free situation.

The Cardinals hope to eventually simulate that same experience when the immediate excitement of his return dies down a bit.

Cardinals: Any reason to be concerned about Albert Pujols?

Pujols is also dealing with the personal matter of a divorce from his wife of 22 years, Deidre Pujols. Deidre also just got a brain tumor removed. While the two support each other, there’s surely a lot of hurt and pain involved this traumatic period of their lives.

Eventually, when things settle, Pujols should get into a groove with his regular role. The pageantry of Opening Day was nice, as were the constant ovations Pujols received from the home crowd over a decade in the making.

But the only way Albert will really contribute to this team is with his bat, and that’ll come with time.
