Tyrann Mathieu, LSU legends congratulate Derek Stingley, Jr. on NFL Draft night
By Nick Villano
The Houston Texans took Derek Stingley Jr. with the third-overall pick in the NFL Draft. He’s the latest defensive back to come out of an LSU system that’s known for producing stars.
The LSU Tigers pride was showing on Thursday night. At one point, Derek Stingley Jr. looked like the best prospect in the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s falling off slightly in terms of production at LSU, but the Houston Texans still make him the number-three overall pick.
The Tigers have a long history of defensive backs in the NFL. Jamal Adams and Tyrann Mathieu are two of the best safeties in the NFL, and they once patrolled Death Valley at the same time. Tre’Davious White has turned into one of the best corners in the NFL. Patrick Peterson has been in the league for more than a decade after coming out of Louisiana State. It even goes beyond that with retired players like Eric Reid and LaRon Landry showing out for LSU in the past.
Right now, there are five LSU cornerbacks and three safeties on active NFL rosters. Stingley makes that six corners. Stingley makes it five defensive backs that have been taken in the top six of the NFL Draft. Every other team in the country has had five as well. Combined. LSU is producing secondary talent better than anyone else, and it’s not particularly close.
The Houston Texans took the latest player out of DBU. Derek Stingley comes from a long line of great cornerbacks to play for the LSU Tigers.

There is a ton of support for Stingley, including from the school itself. They sent out a tweet, saying that Stingley was the latest player to take his talents from DBU to NFLSU.
It wasn’t just defensive players showing Stingley love on Thursday. He was getting his props from NFL wide receivers who are also LSU alum. Some even know what it’s like to play against him in practice. Others have been doing it in the NFL for a long time.
The Texans taking Stingley where they did is a risk, but taking a chance on a secondary player out of LSU seems to be as safe of a pick as any.
