Next 3 New York Yankees prospects we should expect to get promoted
By Tim Boyle
3) Yankees outfield prospect Estevan Florial
While Peraza and Wesneski have seemingly climbed the minor league ranks and are now nearing their major league debuts, one prospect who has already seen a little bit of action in the show could join them at some point this season. Estevan Florial, a 24-year-old outfielder who has managed to hit .304/.429/.522 in his 28 big league plate appearances, has dropped all the way down to number 30 on MLB.com’s top 30 prospects for the Yankees. How did this happen?
Once regarded as the future center fielder for the Yankees, he could be heading down a familiar with of other highly-touted prospects. Clint Frazier is one that comes to mind.
All of the blame doesn’t fall on Brian Cashman and company. Florial hasn’t played spectacularly in Triple-A. A roster crunch in other areas aside from just the outfield has pushed him and others aside in favor of more experienced players.
Florial should, however, remain a top outfielder for the club to promote the moment an outfielder gets hurt. Primarily a center fielder, he’d be the first to call up if Aaron Hicks goes down. His presence already on the 40-man roster should help him get there, too.
Florial may no longer be an elite prospect. This shouldn’t stop the Yankees from seeing what he can provide them. Even as a fourth or fifth outfielder, Florial can prove valuable.
