If the St. Louis Cardinals are serious about competing against the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, the team will need to make some moves.

The St. Louis Cardinals appear to have some holes in their roster that will need to be addressed. And soon.

The Cardinals made a significant move on Tuesday addressing a much-discussed issue: Paul DeJong. The shortstop was sent to the Cardinals AAA affiliate in Memphis where he will work to improve his hitting. He was hitting .130/.209/.208.

The Cardinals gave the 2019 All-Star time to become more productive. DeJong did seem to be trying to make adjustments without result. The Cardinals will have DeJong work toward improving physically and mentally.

In the meantime, the Cardinals will try to find another solution at shortstop which will have them looking at Edmundo Sosa, Brendan Donovan, and Kramer Robertson, who was brought up with DeJong’s move.

Second baseman Tommy Edman will also get a look at shortstop. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, the Cardinals have been hesitant to have Edman make a move to short as “he has been one of the league’s most productive players offensively and defensively this season.”

Edman is hitting .290/.388/.460 with three home runs. He has eight defensive runs saved at second base for the Cardinals.

Many fans are hopeful that if Edman is moved to shortstop this will assure the promotion of Nolan Gorman to play second base.

This issue combined with ongoing concerns about pitching means the Cardinals have a lot of work ahead of them. The team will need some help this summer and will likely have to make some trades in order to get to their ultimate goal of making it far into this postseason.

Let’s look at some candidates who may be on the Cardinals’ trading block.
