Game of the Week: Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs

This stands to be one of the year’s best games. Last season, the Chiefs visited the Chargers on Thursday Night Football in Week 15 and authored an instant classic, with Kansas City winning the game — and essentially the AFC West — in overtime. This time around, it’s once again Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes, but at Arrowhead Stadium.

For the Chargers, it’s an opportunity to prove all their offseason moves have paid off. Los Angeles has annually enjoyed the preseason hype train but failed to deliver, not reaching the AFC Championship Game since Philip Rivers played on a torn ACL against the New England Patriots in 2007. Herbert has been magical in his first two seasons, but he’s yet to reach the postseason while Mahomes has gone to the conference title game in each of his four years as a starter.

Speaking of Mahomes, a win here goes a long way towards helping his Chiefs win a seventh straight AFC West crown. Yes, it’s only Week 2 and both the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are improved, but the Chargers stand to be the toughest competition. By beating Los Angeles early on, it immediately puts the Chargers in a trail position.
