2. Cardinals prospect Ivan Herrera could be an asset to trade for Xander Bogaerts

Do the St. Louis Cardinals really think that Ivan Herrera will be the heir apparent to Yadier Molina behind the plate? If so, parting with the backstop might not be that easy. However, if the Cardinals are looking to make a bold move and give Yadi and Albert Pujols one more shot at a World Championship, it might cost them their future.

Herrera was an international signee of the Redbirds back in 2016 and the 21-year-old has steadily climbed the ladder and is now sitting at Triple-A Memphis. Herrera is a solid backstop and could be a key piece to any potential trade for Xander Bogaerts.

The Cardinals already have Andrew Knizner backing up Molina this season, so it’s not as though St. Louis is devoid of talented catchers who are ready to replace the future Hall of Famer. But Knizner is much more of a defense-first catcher.

Ivan Herrera has the makings of an everyday catcher at the next level. Will the St. Louis Cardinals be willing to give Yadier Molina’s eventual successor in order to secure Xander Bogaerts’ services from the Boston Red Sox?
