Steelers: 3 reasons Kenny Pickett should start right away
By John Buhler
1. Sitting the most pro-ready quarterback prospect in year one is a big problem
Look. This is not that hard. Whoever drafted Pickett would have done so with every intention of him starting Week 1. Though other quarterback prospects may have higher ceilings than him, he is without question the most pro-ready. Pickett started games for years at Pitt and was a Heisman Trophy finalist a season ago. If he is not starting games early as a rookie, that is a huge problem.
It would signify the worst thing possible for the Steelers, which is Pickett is already operating at close to his ceiling as a professional, and he still cannot beat out Trubisky for playing time! He may have been the No. 20 overall pick for a reason, but there are plenty of quarterbacks scattered throughout the league who start that did not get picked on a Thursday in their respective drafts.
If the Steelers want to do this thing right, they cannot be timid. They cannot dip their toes into the water with Pickett, they have to jump into the pool with him and be all-in. Pittsburgh is not going to bottom out this season, but the Steelers are probably not going to be a playoff team either. It would serve them to gather as much intel as possible on Pickett year one to see if he is the guy.
The Steelers have no choice but to see if Pickett is their future by making him part of the present.
