Yankees rumors: Luis Medina is a buried pitching prospect to trade for Frankie Montas

Luis Medina is ranked 12th in the Yankees farm system behind a whole bunch of other pitchers who get talked about a lot more. Already on the 40-man roster, Medina has been with the organization since 2016 and not really achieved a whole lot until recently.

As poor as this may sound, he could be exactly the type of pitcher the Athletics are looking at. He finished the 2021 season with a 3.39 ERA which put him on the radar as a guy to start keeping a close eye on. This year hasn’t gone especially well for him thus far. Medina is 1-2 with a 5.00 ERA in his first six starts down in Double-A.

Medina wouldn’t be a major loss for the Yankees and would have the potential to be a big gain for the Athletics. They aren’t eager to add MLB-ready prospects at the moment. Their focus on winning will come a few more years down the road when they have acquired a couple more top prospects in exchange for the ones they successfully developed.

The Athletics would be wise to try prying away someone of more note from the Yankees. Even if they can snag another pitcher with slightly better expectations, the loss of Medina wouldn’t be something the Yankees would be too upset over.
