Yankees rumors: 3 assets New York can trade for Frankie Montas
By Tim Boyle
If there are going to be any New York Yankees rumors about a trade for Oakland Athletics pitcher Frankie Montas, these are three names we can expect them to offer.
The New York Yankees may not have any immediate need to make a trade for Frankie Montas but let’s consider this one dread word: injuries. The Yankees have several starters with injury concerns and the team may eventually even decide to limit the number of innings for certain starters. For this reason, we should expect Yankees rumors to swirl about the possibility of adding a starting pitcher like Frankie Montas.
Montas might be the most available starting pitcher on the market, still with the Oakland Athletics as one of their final trade chips to shop this summer.
With team control for this season and next, he’s more than a rental. If he does indeed become someone the Yankees view as an upgrade or even a need for the rotation, these are the three assets they should look to trade in order to acquire him.
Yankees rumors: Trey Sweeney is the best prospect to even think about dealing for Frankie Montas
Behind Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza, the Yankees have another shortstop prospect to use as an asset in a trade. His name is Trey Sweeney.
Sweeney is the fifth-ranked prospect in the farm system according to MLB.com. The franchise’s first-round draft pick last year, Sweeney is an obvious guy who could see a position or franchise change sooner rather than later.
The big question the Yankees would need to ask themselves is whether or not Montas is the guy to trade Sweeney for. They seem committed to Volpe or Peraza; a question they have yet to fully answer. The Yankees have been shy about trading either of them and could possibly even hold onto both and see them battle it out at some point in the future.
Sweeney might be more than enough for the Yankees to pluck Montas away from the Athletics. Perhaps adding another player in the deal, depending on their needs at the time, could turn this into a bigger deal with Sweeney and another prospect going to the Athletics for Montas and a role player. Tony Kemp’s versatility should intrigue everyone.
