White Sox trade rumors: Whit Merrifield

Whit Merrifield will be a very popular name in the coming weeks, as the Kansas City Royals are looking more and more likely to finally deal their star second baseman. Merrifield’s contract is incredibly team-friendly, which means the Royals’ brass will be looking to get quite the return for the 33-year-old’s services.

Merrifield is not off to a hot start to begin the 2022 season, but we’ve seen time and time again how much impact the South Carolina native can have on a game. The two-time All-Star is one of the more versatile players in the game and has spent most of the season splitting time between second base and right field.

If there’s an area the Chicago White Sox might be looking to upgrade, it’s second base and right field. Currently, Chicago is tied to a platoon of Leury Garcia and Josh Harrison at the keystone with both infielders hitting below the Mendoza line.

Right field has primarily been patrolled by the veteran Adam Engel and former first-round pick Andrew Vaughn. Merrifield would be an upgrade at either spot, but especially a second base.

Merrifield will not come cheap, but it’s the type of upgrade that would thrust the Chicago White Sox right back into the discussion for the AL Central division crown. It may be unorthodox, but the White Sox may need to look inside the division in order to improve their roster.
