Joey Gallo rumors: Padres could trade for Yankees slugger

The San Diego Padres were the team to help the Yankees find a new home for Luke Voit. The other poor-fitting player on the Yankees roster, he’s having a season almost just as bad as Gallo. The two players are quite different, however. Voit is more of a natural DH while Gallo can still field in the outfield well.

The Padres had long-been a candidate to add Gallo to their roster in the offseason. Their ability to stay alive through much of the first few weeks of 2022 despite only having two guys hitting over .250 (Eric Hosmer and Manny Machado) proves they might be willing to take a chance on someone like Gallo. While Gallo wouldn’t increase their team batting average, the change of scenery might be good for him—but probably not.

So far this season, the Padres have primarily used Voit out of the DH spot but they also recently signed New York Mets castoff and former Yankees All-Star Robinson Cano for a similar role. On their roster, Gallo could insert himself into any of the three outfield spots and even allow the Padres to bench Voit in favor of someone like Wil Myers to move to more starts as a DH.

The Padres haven’t necessarily made any dumb moves and they have been rather aggressive in trying to improve their roster. They narrowly made what could have ended up being a catastrophic error in dumping Hosmer over the offseason. Without him, their playoff dreams would probably be dead already.

San Diego needs some kind of boost to their offense. A trade for Gallo would give them that—but only maybe once a week when he does get a big home run. Otherwise, it’s a dumb trade to make.
