Joey Gallor rumors: Rockies could trade for Yankees slugger

Nolan Arenado was too expensive for the Colorado Rockies so they traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. Rather than undergo a major rebuild, they came back this offseason and signed Kris Bryant to a massive deal. This begs the question: why did they even trade Arenado in the first place?

There has been a lot of front office shuffling in Colorado and the team has been dragged through the mud—rightfully so—by the fans who saw them clearly attempting to lose. In response, the Rockies have reacted by trying to reverse course and spend money on players. Aside from Bryant, they gave starting pitcher Kyle Freeland a five-year extension worth $64.5 million.

Trapped in some weird limbo of winning and losing, trading with the Yankees for Gallo would feel so Rockies right now.

The Rockies have found themselves in the National League West hunt early this year with some distance finally being put between them and the truly good teams in the division. Just because they won’t win the division doesn’t mean their playoff hopes are dashed. The MLB playoffs are expanded and a wild card could always happen for them.

Gallo isn’t an obvious fit anywhere for the Rockies but that’s the point of what makes it so dumb. He’s not necessarily a square peg for a round hole. More than anything, he’d be a quick buy the Rockies might add to try and out-slug their opponents because they clearly won’t be able to win with their pitching ever.

As long as the Rockies don’t fade in the playoff picture, they should be a potential landing spot for Gallo. In their minds, they may even think of it as an opportunity to start a relationship for next year. For as much as playing 81 games at Coors Field would theoretically help him, let’s also remember how the short porch at Yankee Stadium has done little to improve his career.
