2. The Red Sox will demote Phillips Valdez again

Phillips Valdez is going to sell seats at Fenway. Possibly the last man in the team’s bullpen, he has somehow managed to already take over the league lead in hit batters with 6 of them after only 12.1 innings of work. This lack of control will certainly get in the way of Boston having any patience with him whatsoever.

Valdez has been with the Red sox for several years and saw himself pitching well in 2020. However, in 2021, Valdez struggled and spent a lot of time in Triple-A.

This year, Valdez appears to be slotted in as one of those guys who will travel back and forth between the majors and Triple-A. He has already seen action at both levels. Through the small sample size, in addition to hitting major league batters, he’s walking a whole lot of guys in the minors. Although he owns a 1.17 ERA in his 7.2 innings of work, this also includes 7 walks.

Valdez is easily a choice to become a roster casualty as soon as the Red Sox need a fresh arm or someone returns from the IL. As much as some Red Sox fans would love to see Matt Barnes never pitch for this club ever again, the team is far more likely to demote Valdez and stash him in Triple-A until they need some innings eaten.
