Twins: Gio Urshela reveals mixed emotions about Yankees trade
By Mark Powell
While Gio Urshela has had plenty of time to adjust to his time with the Minnesota Twins, the trade away from the Yankees still stings.
Urshela said he was initially “confused” with the Yankees decision to trade him, but got over it in a big way with the Twins, who now lead the AL Central. The deal has so far been a win-win for both teams, with Urshela and Sanchez as integral parts of a winning baseball team in Minnesota.
As for the Yanks, while Josh Donaldson has added to the chaos in the Bronx, Isiah Kiner-Falefa has been a solid defensive addition at shortstop.
Before the series, Urshela explained how he’s adjusted to no longer being a Yankee.
“It’s gonna be fun playing against my old teammates. A lot of memories of good times, the past three years,” Urshela said. “I mean, every year I play there it’s going through my mind, I spend a lot of time there. My best year in my career was with the Yankees. so it’s gonna be fun.”
Yankees: Gio Urshela’s conflicted emotions make sense
Urshela relishes the opportunity to face his former team in the postseason, as would any former prospect traded away for a perceived upgrade.
“Yeah, that would be fun,” Urshela said.
While the initial plan was for Gio to play shortstop as a fill-in until the likes of Anthony Volpe would be ready to come up to the bigs, when IKF became available, New York couldn’t turn down the opportunity.
“That day they said I was going to play shortstop,” Urshela said. “And the next day I had a new team.”
As a result, New York took on some of Donaldson’s contract, and shipped Urshela along with Sanchez to Minnesota. The results of said trade are still processing.
